The Golden Ball Went at 10/1 — and I Think the Market Deserved It
Available in USFour award markets. Three settled exactly as priced. One did not, and it was the headline one. I have written enough of these columns to know that a 1/9 shot going down is worth more of your attention than three favourites obliging, so that is where we will spend most of the time.

A 1/9 shot is the market telling you something is about 90% certain. It lost, and the winner came from 10/1.
Why I Think the Market Deserved That One
The Golden Ball was priced like a production market when it is a voting market. Messi’s 8 goals and 4 assists were the best creator return at the tournament, 1/9 followed from the stat sheet, and on paper it looked like free money. But the award does not go to the top of the statistics — it goes to whoever voters decide was the best player, and voters watched the same final you did.
What moved them:
- Messi was held scoreless in the final and Argentina lost.
- Rodri captained a side that won all eight and conceded once, and played 120 minutes against a team that never had a shot on target.
- His ~756 completed passes was a tournament record, past Xavi’s 599.
Rodri: "It feels like the perfect script. I certainly didn’t expect this."
My rule after this one: treat voting markets as a full price band riskier than result markets. If a subjective panel decides and a single game can rewrite the story, 1/9 is not 1/9. I would not have backed Rodri at 10/1 either — but I would not have touched Messi at 1/9, and that is the useful half of the lesson.
The Golden Boot: Records in a Fourth-Place Finish
Mbappe finished on 10 goals. Two things make it historic:
- He is the first player ever to win the Golden Boot at two World Cups — 8 in 2022, 10 in 2026.
- His 22 career World Cup goals are the new all-time record, past Messi’s 21, scored in 22 World Cup matches.
And the contradiction that makes it the tournament’s oddest individual story: all of it in a campaign where France finished fourth, losing the third-place game 6-4. Golden Boot, all-time record, Bronze Ball — and a fourth-place medal.

Messi drifted to 12/1 (13.00) for the Boot before the final and that price was correct — he did not score.
Two Assist Records, Regularly Confused
- Michael Olise (France): 7 assists — a record for a single tournament, past Pele’s mark.
- Lionel Messi: 12 career World Cup assists — the all-time record, past Pele’s 10.
Different measures entirely, and they have been reported interchangeably all week.
